A 63-year-old woman has been put into isolation on the Gold Coast after testing positive to coronavirus.

On Saturday it was revealed the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Australia has increased by two to 25, including the Queensland woman.

The beautician saw up to 40 people at a Southport salon on Thursday before she started to develop symptoms and went home.

“She saw a number of clients each for brief interactions, so we believe the risk is incredibly low,” she said.

Health authorities are trying to track down all the people the woman treated.

A 79-year-old west Australian woman has also tested positive after being evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan.

This comes as the World Heath Organisation raised the risk of the spread of the disease to “very high”.

What is a pandemic?

According to Merriam Webster, the dictionary definition is “an outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area and affects an exceptionally high proportion of the population”.

A pandemic in simpler terms is the worldwide outbreak of a disease.

When was the last pandemic?

The last pandemic was in 2009 for H1N1 flu pandemic which killed hundreds of thousands of people globally.

“It was detected first in the United States and spread quickly across the United States and the world,” the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said.

“This new H1N1 virus contained a unique combination of influenza genes not previously identified in animals or people.”

What should I buy?

NSW Health has put out some helpful information about preparing for an influenza pandemic which will apply to a coronavirus pandemic, should it be declared.

They recommend putting together an emergency kit that could potentially help meet the needs of your family for up to 14 days.

“Every family should have an emergency kit. The kit can be used in all types of emergencies, including an influenza pandemic, severe storms, floods and bushfires,” they said.

“During a severe pandemic, you and your family may have limited access to food, water and essential supplies.

“You should prepare a home emergency kit and ensure you have adequate supplies in your pantry to help you meet the needs of your family for up to 14 days.”

Should I keep kids home from school?

It’s important to keep your child home from school if they’re sick, in order to protect other students from getting sick.

If your child is not sick, monitor local school closings and judge from there.

What do I do if we are going away?

Smart Traveller has some recommendations for those travelling during the outbreak.

If a pandemic is declared this information could change depending on its severity, so head to the website for the most recent information.

“Talk to your doctor before travelling with young children, babies or an elderly person; if you are pregnant; if you have a weak immune system, or have a chronic medical condition,” Smart Traveller said.

“If you’re in an affected area or transiting an area with cases of COVID-19, contact your travel agent and accommodation and transportation providers about any potential changes in services or entry requirements,” the current information reads.

“Check with your travel insurance company about how your specific policy covers the situation.

“If you develop symptoms while travelling or within 14 days of returning to Australia, you should see a doctor.”

People are also advised to call the clinic or hospital before they arrive to advise them of their travel history.

What do I do about my medications?

Before a pandemic is declared, it’s recommended that people check their regular prescription drugs to ensure there is a continuous supply at home.

It could also be helpful for people to get copies and electronic version of health records, as a personal reference.

“Your doctor likely offers the option to conduct an appointment over the phone or via video conferencing, and if not, your doctor could recommend a physician who does,” CNN said.

Should I start wearing a mask?

The Department of Health says that masks are only helpful in preventing people who already have the disease from spreading it.

“Surgical masks in the community are only helpful in preventing people who have coronavirus disease from spreading it to others,” they explain on their website.

“If you are well, you do not need to wear a surgical mask as there is little evidence supporting the widespread use of surgical masks in healthy people to prevent transmission in public.”

Where do I get the most recent information?

If you need any more up to date information on coronavirus, its symptoms or the recent travel advice regarding it, these websites have in-depth information on the matter.
