Iranian couple bring medical expertise to NH | What’s Working

Source link BEDFORD — Hamid Jalili and his wife, Bahareh Khamesi, helped save lives as doctors in their native Iran. But wanting a better life for their two daughters, they decided to relocate to New Hampshire, where his relatives already lived. Foreign-born workers who want to work in the United States can help ease the region’s labor shortage, but they often need to overcome obstacles first. This family of four was at the Tehran airport the day the U.S. government’s travel ban took effect in early 2017. “It was very disappointing because we sold all of our stuff — our house, our cars. We left our jobs,” Jalili, 53, said in the family’s two-bedroom apartment not far from busy Route 3. The family spent a week in limbo before receiving approval to fly to America. Even then, authorities held up their then-19-year-old daughter, Helia, from leaving for another day, forcing the family to split up. U.S. government officials “had a problem with our governmen

Source link BERLIN — The Golden Bear for best feature film at the Berlin International Film Festival was given on Saturday to “There Is No Evil,” a drama by the Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof centering on people who carry out executions in the Islamic Republic. Rasoulof, who in 2019 was sentenced to prison in Iran for “spreading propaganda” and has been banned from making films and leaving the country, was not able to attend the ceremony. The film was directed in secret while Rasoulof was appealing his sentence. In an emotional acceptance speech, Farzad Pak, one of the film’s producers, described the director’s absence as an injustice and praised the film’s cast, saying they “put their lives in danger” to be in the film. The actors, many of whom were in tears, were given a standing ovation. This year’s jury was led by the British actor Jeremy Irons, and included the American filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan and the French-Argentine actress Bérénice Bejo. The runner-up award wa

Trump Says Ready To Help Iran With Coronavirus If Asked

Image
Source link Oxon Hill, United States, Feb 29, 2020 (AFP) – U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday he was ready to aid Iran with its outbreak of novel coronavirus if the country asked for assistance. “If we can help the Iranians with this problem, we are certainly willing to do so… All they have to do is ask. We will have great professionals over there,” Trump said at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) near Washington. The virus has now hit 61 countries across the globe, prompting the World Health Organization to raise its risk assessment to its highest level. Iran’s health ministry on Saturday reported nine new deaths, taking the total to 43. U.S. authorities in the West Coast state of Washington meanwhile confirmed on Saturday the first fatality on American soil. Trump imposed new restrictions on anyone who has traveled in the last two weeks to Iran, and urged Americans not to visit hard-hit areas of Italy and South Korea. The U.S. State Departmen

Trump expands Iran travel ban in wake of first US coronavirus death

Source link President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and senior US health officials announced Saturday afternoon that the Trump administration will respond to a global increase in confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus by expanding its travel ban on Iran and issuing “do not travel” warnings to areas in Italy and South Korea most affected by viral outbreaks. The announcement comes in the wake of the first US death due to the novel coronavirus in Washington state, where a woman in her 50s, described by the president Saturday as being “medically high-risk,” died from the virus overnight. Under the new travel restrictions, no Iranians or non-Americans who have been to the country in the last 14 days will be allowed to enter the US, Pence said. Iran has reported 593 cases of the coronavirus and 43 deaths — the largest number of deaths outside of mainland China. Bahrain threatens arrest of travelers from Iran untested for virus

Source link DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Bahrain on Saturday threatened legal prosecution against travelers who came from Iran and hadn’t been tested for the new coronavirus, and also barred public gatherings for two weeks as confirmed cases across the wider Middle East grew to over 520.
