Iranian and Turkish women join black-and-white Instagram challenge

Image
Source link Iranian Instagram feeds have been overrun with black-and-white photos of women joining an international online campaign against gender-based violence, using the hashtags #WomenSupportWomen and #ChallengeAccepted. The campaign follows an outcry against a number of high-profile “honor killings” in Iran over the last two months. The term is used for murder cases in which women are killed by relatives who claim to be preserving a family’s honor. The Instagram campaign also has quickly gained traction in neighboring Turkey, where activists already had joined an existing campaign for women to support each other in raising awareness of gender-based violence — and the lack of consequences for perpetrators — in their country. Protests were sparked this month by the murder of university graduate Pinar Gultekin, 27, who was beaten and strangled to death by a man who her family claims was stalking her. Other reports suggested he was Gultekin’s former partner. After killing her, he b

Kylie Moore-Gilbert: Iran to allow Australian ambassador to meet jailed academic

Source link Moore-Gilbert, an academic at the University of Melbourne, has been detained in Iran since 2018. She was found guilty of espionage last year and sentenced to 10 years in prison; on Tuesday, she was transferred to a women’s prison notorious for human rights violations. “The person convicted of espionage is scheduled to meet with the Australian ambassador on Sunday,” according to Iranian news agency Mizan. “Following the publication of a claim in cyberspace that Moore Gilbert was in poor physical condition, the Mizan reporter found out that the prisoner was in perfect health,” said the report. A spokesperson for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed to CNN that its ambassador to Iran will be allowed to make a consular visit to Moore-Gilbert “shortly.” “Dr Moore-Gilbert’s case is one of the Australian government’s highest priorities, including for our embassy officials in Tehran,” the spokesperson said. “We hold Iran responsible for Dr. Moore-Gil

Ukraine welcomes ‘constructive’ Iran talks but no details on plane crash compensation yet | News

The talks lasted 11 hours. In general, they were constructive,” Kuleba said in a video briefing after meeting with an Iranian delegation. “There is agreement and understanding that the most transparent and unbiased investigation by Iran is needed.” Iranian forces say they downed the Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737 jet after mistaking it for a missile at a time when tensions with the United States had risen. All 176 people on board – including 57 Canadians – were killed. (Reporting by Pav

Iran group claim attacks on 28 Israeli railway stations

Source link TEHRAN A cyber cold war is raging between Iran and Israel as another Iranian group early Friday claimed to have launched a series of cyberattacks on Israel’s rail infrastructure since July 14. A group that goes by the name Cyber Avengers said in a statement it targeted more than 150 industrial servers of Israel’s railways, affecting operations at 28 train and subway stations. The statement was published by Telegram channels that is linked to Iran’s revolutionary guards (IRGC). The “major cyber operation” was launched July 14 at 1.20 a.m. (2050GMT), the time of airstrikes on Iranian military commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani in early January. The operation continued for 10 days, ending July 24. However, the group warned the “worst is yet to come,” suggesting the cyber warfare between the two countries is likely to escalate. The group also released a map of Israel’s rail network, identifying the 28 stations that were targeted, including Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University and

Ukraine, Iran begin negotiations on compensation for plane crash

Source link Kiev:  Ukraine began negotiations with an Iranian delegation on compensation for the plane of Ukraine International Airlines (UIA), which was shot down near Tehran earlier this year, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Facebook. “Today in Kiev, Iranian delegation started the negotiations on compensation for Iran’s shooting down of the Ukrainian International Airlines PS752 flight. We have been striving for a long time to start the negotiation process, and I welcome the beginning of negotiations,” said the diplomat on Thursday, Xinhua news agency reported. Kuleba noted that the process would not be easy, but Ukraine will do everything to achieve maximum compensation for the relatives of the victims of the plane crash. The Boeing-737, en route from Tehran to Kiev, was shot down by two rockets shortly after takeoff from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport on Jan. 8. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of all 167 passengers and nine crew members on board

Expansion of the Scope of Iran Metals Sanctions Targeting Iran’s Nuclear, Military, and Ballistic Missile Programs and the IRGC

Source link PRESS STATEMENT MICHAEL R. POMPEO, SECRETARY OF STATE Iran’s nuclear, ballistic missile, and military programs pose a grave threat to international peace and security.  To address these threats, I am announcing a major expansion of the scope of State Department-administered Iran metals-related sanctions.  Today, the State Department is identifying 22 specific materials used in connection with Iran’s nuclear, military, or ballistic missile programs. Those who knowingly transfer such materials to Iran are now sanctionable pursuant to Section 1245 of the Iranian Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act. Under the same provision of law, I am continuing my determination that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) controls Iran’s construction sector.  The IRGC’s construction firm and many of its subsidiaries remain sanctioned by the United Nations because they were directly involved in the construction of the uranium enrichment site at Fordow.  As a result of this IRGC de

Pacific Islands must stop relying on foreign aid to adapt to climate change, because the money won’t last

Image
Source link By Patrick D. Nunn, Professor of Geography, School of Social Sciences, University of the Sunshine Coast The storm of climate change is approaching the Pacific Islands. Its likely impact has been hugely amplified by decades of global inertia and the islands’ growing dependency on developed countries. The background to this situation is straightforward. For a long time, richer developed countries have been underwriting the costs of climate change in poorer developing countries, leaving them reliant on Western solutions to their climate-related issues. Read more: Their fate isn’t sealed: Pacific nations can survive climate change – if locals take the lead But as rising sea water continues to encroach on these low-lying Pacific islands, inundating infrastructure and even cemeteries, it’s clear almost every externally sponsored attempt at climate adaptation has failed here. And as the costs of adaptation in richer countries escalate, this funding support to developi

Iran: Leaked official letters reveal state denial of COVID-19 crisis in prisons

Source link Leaked official letters newly obtained by Amnesty International reveal that the Iranian government has ignored repeated pleas by senior officials responsible for managing Iran’s prisons for additional resources to control the spread of COVID-19 and treat infected prisoners. The organization reviewed copies of four letters signed by officials at Iran’s Prisons Organization, which operates under the supervision of the judiciary, to the Ministry of Health, raising the alarm over serious shortages of protective equipment, disinfectant products, and essential medical devices. The Ministry of Health failed to respond, and Iran’s prisons remain catastrophically unequipped for outbreaks. These official letters provide damning evidence of the government’s failure to protect prisoners. Urgent requests for resources have been ignored for months. Diana Eltahawy, Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa The details in the letters stand in stark contrast t

Iran Dismisses Leaked Details of Proposed China Deal | Voice of America

Source link ISLAMABAD – Talks between Iran and China aimed at finalizing a 25-year strategic cooperation agreement are continuing despite what Tehran dismissed as “baseless rumors” about the deal that leaked earlier this month. The draft partnership proposal leaked online to the press calls for China to invest $400 billion in Iran’s energy, telecommunications, infrastructure, ports, railways and other sectors in exchange for Tehran’s supplying Beijing with a heavily discounted supply of oil over the next 25 years. Iran’s ambassador to neighboring Pakistan, Seyed Mohammad Ali Hosseini, has rebutted the reports as Western media propaganda. “Given that no modalities have been agreed on the details of the cooperation so far, these rumors are baseless and mere political and media speculations,” Hosseini said. The Iranian envoy’s written remarks were read out at an online forum organized this week by the Islamabad Policy Institute (IPI), a nongovernmental Pakistani think tank, to discuss

Iran Health Ministry says COVID-19 deaths are higher than reported

Source link Jul 30, 2020 As the country struggles to bring down the high number of coronavirus-related deaths, Iran’s Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi appeared on national television to show how the country is struggling with a second wave of deaths. Standing before a chart  showing the daily deaths since February, when Iran first experienced the outbreak of coronavirus infections, Harirchi said on average 102 Iranians have died from the virus per day. The chart shows Iran — experiencing a second wave with a dip in the middle of April — as having over 200 deaths a day currently. Harirchi warned that the numbers are misleading. He said 1,000 Iranians a day die on average, and of the current daily deaths, a number of those individuals were hospitalized and treated for COVID-19 symptoms but never tested positive. Therefore, according to World Health Organization protocol, they are not technically counted as COVID-19 deaths. He warned that the “most important health, social, econo

There aren’t enough batteries to electrify all cars — focus on trucks and buses instead

Image
Source link By Cameron Roberts, Researcher in Sustainable Transportation, Carleton University We need to change our transportation system, and we need to do it quickly. Road transportation is a major consumer of fossil fuels, contributing 16 per cent of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, which warm up the Earth’s atmosphere and cause changes to the climate. It also pollutes the air , threatening health and costing taxpayers billions of dollars annually . At the same time, electric vehicles are getting cheaper, and vehicle range and the availability of charging stations are improving . This is exciting for many because it seems to suggest an easy and convenient answer to the problem of transportation emissions: if everyone swapped their fossil-fuelled vehicle for an electric equivalent, we could all keep driving, safe in the knowledge that we are no longer killing the planet by doing so — and all while enjoying a new car that is quiet, cheap to power and fun to drive. Coronavirus claims 226 more lives in Iran

Source link TEHRAN Iran on Thursday confirmed 226 more fatalities from the novel coronavirus, bringing the nationwide death toll to 16,569, according to an official. A further 2,621 people tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, raising the overall count to 301,530, Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said. She said more than 261,200 people have so far recovered and been discharged from hospitals, adding that 4,041 patients remain in critical condition. Over 2.43 million tests have been conducted in the country to date, Lari added. The alarming surge in daily fatalities has sent shockwaves across Iran as the health care system is already overwhelmed. One of the first countries in the region to bear the brunt of the COVID-19 outbreak, Iran on Feb. 19 reported its first two deaths in the city of Qom, 140 kilometers (87 miles) south of Tehran. In the first wave of the outbreak, single-day deaths peaked on April 4 with 158 fatalities, before dropping to their low
