Iran uses Friday prayers to bash Trump’s ‘Deal of the Century’

Source link Iranian prayer leaders were encouraged to use Friday prayers to communicate the regime’s anger with US President Donald Trump’s “Deal of the Century” which was proposed this week. Ayatollah Mohammad Movahedi-Kermani, the Friday prayer leader in Tehran slammed the deal as the “betrayal and scandal of the century.”  Movahedi-Kermani’s speech on January 31 enumerated all the ways that Iran dislikes Trump and the Deal. He said it was a unilateral decision by Israel, the US and several Arab countries “The plan has been protests by freedom-loving peoples in the region and the world.” He asserted that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas had condemned the plan.  The Iranian regime has been trying to use the deal to leverage support across the region against the US and Israel. Iran is under tough sanctions and has faced protests at home. It wants to channel the distraction of the deal to push a new narrative. In this narrative is Iran’s claim that it supports the Pales

US Forces Block Another Russian Convoy as Tensions Rise in Northeast Syria | Voice of America

Source link HASAKAH, SYRIA / WASHINGTON – U.S. forces in northeast Syria again prevented Russian military convoys from touring near the Iraqi border on Friday, in what locals described as an increased escalation between both sides over freedom of navigation in the predominantly Kurdish region.  A VOA reporter saw American Humvees patrolling the main road of al-Malikiyah town, also known as Derik, in northeast Hasakah province, in what local sources said was an effort to prevent an approaching Russian convoy from passing by the region.  The sources said the dispute was over the control of M4 highway, al-Malikiyah and Tall Tamr areas that became a dividing line between the two sides following the October 2019 Turkish incursion that forced the U.S. to pull out from much of the Turkey-northeast Syria border region.  “I see [U.S. and Russian forces] a lot on these roads. They have their own disputes. They block roads here and there. For example, in Xana Sere village and in Derik,” a re

Between Iran threat and Bezos hack, 2020 is shaping up to be good for cybersecurity firms

Source link In a closed-door briefing with Senate aides, the companies described how hacking outfits linked to Iran, criminal groups and other adversaries are growing more sophisticated — and how they could take advantage of a complex web of vulnerable US targets to sow chaos, according to several people familiar with the Jan. 16 meeting. Some of the hypothetical scenarios could have fit into a James Bond plot. By compromising the power grid, for example, skilled attackers could try to bring down oil and gas facilities that depend on electricity, Sergio Caltagirone, vice president of threat intelligence at Dragos, told the group. The presentations by Dragos and two other companies — CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) and Cloudflare ( NET ) — highlight the way rising international tensions, increasingly capable hackers and a high-stakes election year are combining to create a perfect storm of risks for US businesses, infrastructure providers and state and local governments. On Jan. 22, The Gu

Iranian national charged in $115 million sanctions busting scheme

Source link An Iranian national living in Canada has been charged with funneling $115 million through the U.S. financial system in a scheme that benefited several Iranian individuals and companies—and violated U.S. sanctions, according to an indictment unsealed Friday. Bahram Karimi, 53, faces three counts tied to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, and lying to federal investigators, federal prosecutors in New York said. Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings. According to the charging documents, Karimi was involved in an infrastructure project, organized and funded by the governments of Iran and Venezuela, that centered on the creation of a 7,000-unit housing development in Venezuela. Karimi is accused of helping to facilitate payments from a Venezuela company to subsidiaries of two Iranian companies through Swiss bank accounts, which use New York banks in part to route the funds, the indictment says. UN Experts: Yemen’s Rebels Getting Weapons Similar to Iran’s

Source link UNITED NATIONS — Yemen’s Houthi Shiite rebels are receiving parts for drones and weapons, some with technical characteristics similar to arms manufactured in Iran, in potential violation of a U.N. arms embargo, U.N. experts say. The experts said in a report to the Security Council obtained Friday by The Associated Press that the main smuggling route for both the commercially available drone parts and weapons “seems to run overland from Oman and the southern coast of Yemen, through territory controlled by the government of Yemen, towards Sanaa,” the country’s capital, which is controlled by the Houthis. The panel said the high-profile seizure Nov. 25 of a dhow in the Arabian Sea carrying anti-tank missiles indicates that sea transport also “continues to play a role” in potential violations of the arms embargo. The Yemen conflict began with the 2014 takeover of Sanaa by the Houthis, who control much of the country’s north. A Saudi-led military coalition allied with Yeme

Carolyn Kaster/AP President Trump is putting new immigration restrictions on Nigeria and five other countries, the Department of Homeland Security announced Friday, in the latest move to reshape U.S. immigration rules. The new policy restricts immigrant visas for citizens of Nigeria, Sudan, Tanzania, Eritrea, Myanmar, and Kyrgyzstan. It does not ban them from traveling to the U.S. for other reasons. By putting restrictions on the six countries, the Trump administration nearly doubles the number of nations targeted by some form of travel ban. Unlike the controversial travel ban on citizens of Iran, Somalia, and other countries, the new policy does not affect nonimmigrant visas. That means

With four days remaining, Sanders leads narrowly in Iowa, but Biden leads nationally

Source link By Adrian Beaumont, Honorary Associate, School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Melbourne Four days before the US Iowa Democratic caucuses next Tuesday AEDT, the RealClearPolitics poll average has Bernie Sanders narrowly leading with 23.8%, followed by Joe Biden on 20.2%, Pete Buttigieg 15.8%, Elizabeth Warren 14.6% and Amy Klobuchar 9.6%. Nationally , it’s 28.8% Biden, 22.5% Sanders, 14.1% Warren, 8.5% Michael Bloomberg and 6.0% Buttigieg. In the past two weeks, Biden and particularly Sanders have gained, mostly at the expense of Warren and Buttigieg. Iowa is important because it helps to winnow the field of candidates, and candidates who exceed expectations often get a surge in their national voting intentions. However, the almost all-white Iowa does not represent the overall Democratic primary electorate. Biden has polled strongly with black voters, but not so well with whites. U.S.-Built Iraqi F-16 Fighter Jets in Jeopardy Amid Iran Tensions

Source link It was supposed to be a gesture of goodwill and a good-faith effort to give Iraq the military it needed to defend itself against regional adversaries like Iran and the Islamic State. But some U.S. and Iraqi officials say they are increasingly concerned that Iraq’s F-16 fighter jet program—supplied by the United States and, until recently, secured and maintained by foreign contractors—is vulnerable to seizure by Iranian-backed militias.  Sallyport Global, part of the Caliburn contractor conglomerate based in Reston, Virginia, provided security for the roughly 34-aircraft F-16 squadron at Balad Air Base alongside contractors from Lockheed Martin, who provided maintenance, and Iraqi personnel. But in early January, Sallyport and Lockheed Martin contractors withdrew from the base after facing indirect rocket fire from Iran-backed militias, leaving sensitive U.S. technology potentially vulnerable, U.S. and Iraqi officials tell Foreign Policy . “Due to concerns about the safe

UN asked to act for Christians in Iran facing persecution

Source link CHRISTIANS in Iran continue to face arrests, interrogation, and the denial of their rights to education. Converts from Islam are most at risk, and the United Nations should investigate religious persecution in the country, says a report from the human-rights charities CSW, Article 18, Middle East Concern, and Open Doors. There are believed to be between 500,000 and 800,000 Christians, mostly converts and members of house churches. These churches are watched and often raided by the Revolutionary Guard. Christians are arrested and Bibles are confiscated. Worshipping Christians have been sentenced to up to five years in prison on charges of “Acting against national security”, the report says. The Iranian constitution permits Assyrian and Armenian Christians as a minority to “exercise their religious ceremonies within the limits of the law”, but access to church services is restricted. Many churches have been closed, and their property has been co

Iran on cusp of new era

Source link The State Department released a video earlier this month showcasing the rights Iranians enjoyed before a radical Islamist dictatorship came to power in 1979. Many Iranians and Iranian Americans celebrated the video on social media, but there was also a backlash from critics who condemned the video for “whitewashing the human rights record of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi,” Iran’s prerevolutionary monarch. The legacy of the shah is destined to remain controversial, yet the critics miss the point: The State Department is reaching out effectively to millions of Iranians struggling for freedom after 40 years of the Islamic Republic’s brutal and tyrannical rule. As a crashing economy and mass protests weaken the clerical regime, Iranians struggling for a better future take a measure of comfort and even inspiration from nostalgic memories of the better lives they or their parents had before 1979. Yet acknowledging the past is very different from wishing to repeat it. For many in

US Waiting on Iraq to Approve New Missile Defenses | Voice of America

Source link PENTAGON – U.S. efforts to better protect troops in Iraq from the threat of Iranian missiles are being held up by Iraqi officials, who have yet to decide whether to allow Patriot missile defense batteries into the country. “We need the permission of the Iraqis,” U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Thursday, briefing reporters at the Pentagon. Esper said disagreements about where to place the Patriot batteries also will need to be worked out, should Iraq give the United States the go-ahead. Despite the complications, Esper and other top Pentagon officials are adamant that the missile defense system is needed after at least 50 U.S. troops suffered traumatic brain injuries from an Iranian missile attack on the al-Asad air base earlier in January. More than 30 of those troops have returned to duty but the rest are still undergoing treatment in Germany or the U.S. FILE – Defense Secretary Mark Esper, left, standing with Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. After Soleimani killing, U.S. braced for Iranian drone and missile strikes

Source link When the military carried out President Donald Trump’s order to kill Iran’s top general, some hardened veterans of the decadeslong U.S.-Iran shadow war were troubled. “Gobsmacked,” was the single-word reaction of a former CIA officer who spent a career working against the targeted general, Qassem Soleimani, an Iranian spy master who helped kill hundreds of Americans. The immediate concern was that Trump’s move — the first known targeted killing of a foreign government official in recent decades — could set in motion a full-scale war, one that could crater the global economy, kill untold numbers of people and leave the United States stuck in yet another Middle East quagmire. That hasn’t happened — at least not yet. Watch this story tonight on “NBC Nightly News With Lester Holt” at 6:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. CT (or check your NBC station). If the US launches cyberattacks on Iran, retaliation could be a surprise

Source link On the morning of Jan. 8, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps fired 22 surface-to-surface missiles at two Iraqi airbases. If Americans had died, the Pentagon would have put in front of President Trump options for cyberattacks to disable Iran’s oil and gas sector. Would the U.S. oil and gas industry have been ready for an Iranian cyber counterattack? While Americans celebrated Thanksgiving , someone hit Iran with a massive cyberattack that disclosed 15 million Iranian bank debit card numbers on a social media site. On Dec. 11, Iran’s telecommunication minister admitted this was “ very big ” and that a nation-state carried it out. Will U.S. banks and credit card companies be ready if Iran tries to hack the card numbers of millions of Americans? The Trump Administration uses sanctions and cyberattacks as their go-to tools against Iran. U.S. officials have admitted twice on background to recent cyberattacks on Iran. The implication that cyberattacks are somehow
